I Really Like Slop! (An Elephant and Piggie Book) Reviews
Bought a few of these for my nephew's 7th birthday. They were such a huge hit! He loves them so much! He enjoyed reading them to me and thought they were hilarious. The pictures are darling, message is sweet and words are simple. The reading level would be good for maybe 5 - 7 years old or a parent could read to a younger child. The quality of the books is amazing and the length of the story is perfect... not too short but not so long it loses their attention.
My daughter has loved the Gerald and Piggie books for about 3 years now. We own every single one, and when I saw this new one was out, we had to get it for Christmas. Overall, the books really seem to do a really good job of showing relationships between the characters, and this one is no exception.
Mo Willems does a great job addressing children's feelings, relationships and dilemmas from their perspective. (In this case, Piggy's love of slop. Gerald doesn't like the way slop smells or looks. Piggy wants her best friend Gerald to try it. He sees what a special food slop is to Piggy. What will Gerald do? ) These are acknowledged and validated while Gerald and Piggy sort things out and come to a satisfactory solution. Enables discussions on many age appropriate levels. The graphics and/or story appeals to my grandchildren aged 18 months to 5 years. My 11 year old granddaughter enjoys reading them to siblings and cousins. However, our discussions on a more nuanced and insightful level.
Absolutely love this one. I'm an animated reader for my child with books, and this one offers so much opportunity. The humor is slightly above average for a Mo Willems books (he has a high bar!). I think he really hit a home run with this book. The story line is good, the outcome/lesson is appropriate, the humor is wonderful (both conceptually and visually), and the book is such a fun read.
I LOVE Piggie and Gerald books and now buy them for myself (uh ... and the grandkids)! As a teacher, I used them with my first graders and even the struggling readers could read these after one time through. It helps kids learn about dialog, reading facial expressions (Mo Willems has the most delightful illustrations!), verbal expression when reading aloud - as well as getting along with friends, caring about them, tolerance of differences, etc. They are as entertaining for the adult who reads them to a child as for the children who love Piggie and Gerald!
PERFECT for a kindergartener. These books have really easy words and as simple as they look, a 5 year old really gets a kick out of Elephant and Piggie's adventures. In this book elephant ends up trying piggie's slop because he said, please JUST ONE BITE... so maybe good for picky eaters, although Elephant says he will not eat slop even after the one bite. But he is very polite about it at least.
I haven't found a Piggy and Gerald book I didn't love. This one does not disappoint. What fun messes they get themselves into! The look on Gerald's face is priceless...and Piggy is just clueless how his slop isn't the most delicious thing Gerald has ever seen. Mo Willems is a creative genius. I love his work. This is a great addition to my collection.
Another gem from Mo Willems in the now ended Elephant and Piggie series. My grandchildren really liked it and I am sure we will be rereading it many times. As a children's librarian, I read these books to kids for many years. While this is not one of my personal favorites of the series, it is a necessary purchase for anyone who loves Gerald and Piggie.
