Doodles Unleashed: Mixed-Media Techniques for Doodling, Mark-Making & Lettering Reviews
I bought this book because I love Traci Bautista's work, I already have, of course, "Collage Unleashed" that I love and which will remain among my favorite books for a very long time, I am sure.
I learned one very important thing from Traci Bautista's book; how to rediscover confidence and sponaneity in my art making. And this, despite her art style being so different from mine. To put it in a nutshell, doodling is a neat way to redicover the joy we had as children in making art. We can get so hung up on technique that our work can become cautious and 'safe.'
I bought this book after seeing it pop up on my Amazon books that I might like list. I have just read through some of the book but have yet to complete it.
I'm a real fan of Traci Bautista's and took her free online workshop that was held on the Strathmore Artist Paper website and have been watching her YouTube videos. I decided to buy "Doodles Unleashed: Mixed-Media Techniques for Doodling, Mark-Making & Lettering" to gain further insight into her work, inspiration, and to trigger ideas. While I am an artist and my work is much different than hers, following her and using some of her methods has freed up my own art and and made it fun again.
Traci has lots of ideas with great detail. I like how she organized this book with the materials as the Creative Toolbox listed up front and a few step by step process with large pictures. I am a visual person and need pictures, but also like a simple description of the process. I especially likes her Circle Doodles exercise on pages 40 and 41. It is simple and direct, but also with a little complex random design. Using a few colors especially the complements of Green and Red to create this wonder painting. I like the red paint with the using the spool of thread with the circle and wagon spokes.
This book is a mess. There is not a single thing in here that is interesting or artistic. It is a very, very dark scribbling mess!
This book allows you to go at your own speed and create awesome artwork! The instructions are clear. I keep this book near my "chair" and when I have quiet moments that I wish to escape the rat race, I sit in my "chair" and browse this book. I browse quite often -- great book, great instructions, great pictures, and a very good art teacher too! She allows you just enough instruction and then you take off and develop your own style, not her's. I love love love this book!
