Transformational Thought by Jason F McLennan is a dynamic collection of provocative essays that critically challenge the design practices and thinking that are interwoven within our contemporary cultural, societal, and personal value systems Rather than an ominous commentary about the terminal shortcomings of society, McLennan relates his architectural acumen and his eclectic knowledge of sustainability, proposing an intelligent, and sometimes radical rethinking of how we live, work and plan for a living future McLennan addresses a wide variety of themes from personal to far reaching systemic change Each insight points the reader toward sustainable solutions, challenges the status quo, balances practicality with philosophy, and prepares us for a healthy and prosperous future McLennan advocates for rapid social change calling for people to engage in productive initiatives beyond current models and to cooperate, take chances and experiment outside of current corporate imagination and our precarious societal scaffolding Transformational Thought provides us with compelling and timely direction in the most highly transformative era humanity is yet to face....

Too much repetition, but I guess it is making an important point. I admit I have only read about half. Hope it gets so something of real help to me before the end...if I do pick it back up.

This book contains a series of essays on our built environment, sustainability and responsible energy use that are brilliantly thought through and very readable. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I read it from cover to cover and found myself slowing down as I reached the end because I didn't want to finish it. My wife purchased the book for me and got me interested in the topic by taking me to a get together on the Living Building Challenge in Culver City in southern California. The Living Building Challenge, talked about toward the end of this book, was conceived by Jason McLennan and is likely to pave the way for buildings of the future. Despite being a complete neophyte in almost every area covered in the book I found the arguments presented most persuasive. This book ought to be mandatory reading for all legislators, local, State and Federal.

Transformational Though by Jason McLennan is truly a remarkable book. McLennan does a brilliant job of taking many complicated topics and not only articulating them in a simple, straightforward way, but also by giving the reader tools to actually change our built environment. Might I say this is dynamic, beautiful manifesto for creating a world we want to live in! Every serious design and construction professional, educator, and student should have a well worn copy of this book on their shelf!!! Thank you Mr. McLennan for giving the world such a fantastic vision for the future!

Yes, Jason it really needs to be about the children now. Although the details of the 'new world' will not be easy to work out, these essays are a fantastic start. I hope we will look back at these ideas and predictions very soon and see how 'right on' your ideas are. Decentralization of major utilities, right scaling of our buildings and environments, local food, and most of all, healthy urban environments where we can know and trust our neighbors and our children can get back outside to play ! Thank you for these essays and your thoughts. I bought this book as Christmas gifts for my 2 grown kids. They may never read them but because they were gifts from me, maybe they will stay on the bookshelf and someone (my grandkids maybe?) will read them someday.
