We love this book! It's funny and interesting. My three-year-old son loves the dad and son characters. I don't think that it ties in very well with adoption and I wouldn't buy it as an adoption explanation book, but it's a fun story for anyone. We didn't buy it for an adoption book - we just like the story.
Our toddler loves this cute story! Got a wonderful price on a used, like new book.
My students really enjoyed this story!
After a few clunkers Simon James has "come back from the dead" with this one. It is his best effort since Baby Brains and very much worth adding to your read aloud collection.
My 2 year old son is obsessed with this book!
When it comes to Children, there is undoubtedly a huge demand for anything Dino. Both of my kids love dinosaurs and we have thoroughly exhausted two libraries worth of anything and everything Dinosaur. The same themes are often seen but when I picked up REX, I found a story that was not only fun for the kids but also dealt with a weighty issue.
In REX, Tyrannosaurus Rex is the most terrifying dinosaur around. He spends his time going around scaring other dinosaurs. One night while he is sleeping in his cave, an abandoned egg cracks open. A tiny dinosaur crawls out and decides that Tyrannosaurus Rex is his father. When Tyrannosaurus Rex says what kind of dinosaur he is, the little dinosaur can only say the name "Rex" and from that point on it is his name and the little tyke follows the big brute all around. Thus begins a tale of an unlikely adoption. I enjoyed REX. It's a story about families and how love can change even the most unlikely of characters.
Children who like dinosaur stories will probably go for this picture book although I found that its subject wasn't much to my liking. When the little dino featured here wanted to emulate his stepdad and create mayhem in the forest I found this to be a message I didn't want to share with young family members. Sure, we are talking about a T-rex here and they weren't gentle creatures but I think there is enough violence and bullying in our society already without encouraging the bad behavior in what is purported to be a "heartwarming story about a surprising dinosaur stepdad"! No thank you, my grandchildren won't see this book!
